Why AC?

In modern cars and lorries, AC dynamos are used to recharge DC batteries. Why use an AC rather than a DC dynamo?

The simplest dynamo produces an alternating voltage. It can be adapted to produce DC, or its AC output can be rectified using diodes in a bridge circuit.
