Data logging

The requirements for ‘Use of apparatus and techniques’ are common to all A-level specifications. Here John Kinchin discusses: ‘11. Use ICT such as computer modelling, or data logger with a variety of sensors to collect data, or use of software to process data’

At some point you will be asked to carry out an experiment that has a variable (or multiple variables) that either changes over a long period of time (growth of a plant or atmospheric air pressure) or changes so rapidly that you cannot hope to measure it reliably. In these circumstances you are likely to reach for a data logger. You may already have these in school, so your choice is limited, or you may be able to borrow them from another institution.

The variety of data loggers available is much better than it was 30 years ago (Figure 1). Many educational manufacturers/ vendors either sell their own brand or market another brand.
