Solving mechanics problems

Hovan Catchatoor and Nicky Robinson analyse a mechanics question for which you have to decide on the steps to take to solve an unstructured problem

Some examination questions set problems that take several steps to solve, but leave you to decide what the steps are and how to order them. This question has two short, unstructured problems that mix calculation with other skills.

The question discussed in this Exam talkback is about a beam engine, a device invented in the early 1700s for pumping water or oil out of the ground, for example in mine dewatering. The efficiency of beam engines was notoriously poor.
