In 2023 the Nobel prize for physics was awarded for experimental methods that can generate attosecond pulses of light. The pulses in this case are laser pulses, so in this issue Carol Tear takes a closer look at lasers

You have only to look at a spot of reflected laser light to see that it is different from other light. This small spot of very intense light has a characteristic speckled pattern that changes as you move your head. The reasons for this are found in the way it is produced.
