The decline in party membership

Philip Lynch discusses what the parties are doing about, and how they are adapting to, declining party membership

Sixty years ago, the Conservative Party had 2.8 million members and the Labour Party 1 million members. Today, only 1% of the electorate are members of a political party.

■ Figures released by the Conservative Party in 2013 showed that its membership had fallen to 134,000, a 55% decline since David Cameron became leader in 2005.
