Feminism is the belief that women are, even now, systematically and unfairly disadvantaged, and that these inequalities can and should be reduced or removed. The ideological history of feminism has been charted in ‘waves’ over the last two centuries.

First-wave feminism, from the nineteenth century to the 1920s, was a largely liberal campaign for the right to vote and for greater educational opportunities for women.
