The three strands of ecology

Revolutionary or reformist? David Tuck outlines what you need to know about ecologism

Ecologism is concerned with the health of the planet’s biosphere: the ground, the air, and water and its inhabitants, both human and non-human. The three strands of ecological thought have different ideas, objectives and goals.

Deep green ecology is revolutionary in nature. Deep green ecologists are critical of anthropocentrism (the idea that human interests are of primary importance) and the mechanistic worldview, where rationalists (influenced by the ideas of the Enlightenment) perceive humans as above nature. They consider these to be destructive and flawed ideas that continue to distort the perspective of humanity to this day.
