Political polarisation in the USA

What are the impacts of the different types of polarisation on contemporary US politics?

The AQA and Edexcel specifications require an understanding of US political parties, their significance in Congress, how they have developed in recent times and the implications on judicial appointments, as well as voting behaviour and election campaigns.

As the USA raced towards civil war in the 1850s, future president Abraham Lincoln declared that ‘a house divided against itself cannot stand’. Americans today see echoes of that era’s division, as partisan polarisation has spiralled to a 150-year high, approaching levels not seen since the end of the Civil War.
