Does the UK need a codified constitution?

An evaluation of the latest developments in the debate over whether the UK should codify its constitution

All major exam boards require a full understanding of constitutional changes since 1997. In addition, the AQA specification references ‘issues and debates around recent constitutional changes’ and Edexcel asks whether the UK should change to adopt an ‘entrenched and codified’ constitution.

For many legal theorists and political commentators, the constitutional arrangements that currently exist in the UK are not fit for purpose. The country’s protracted and acrimonious withdrawal from the EU, its disjointed response to the Covid-19 crisis and the growth of nationalist forces within the union itself appear to have exposed governing arrangements that are in urgent need of reform:
