The UK Supreme Court has made a number of high-profile judgements against the sitting government, most notably the controversial Miller cases (see Box 1). The court’s role as a check on the government is fundamental to its existence: the 2005 Constitutional Reform Act’s replacement of the Law Lords with a Supreme Court aimed to ensure a clear separation of powers and an independent appointments process.
