Now that you have read my article, investigate an environment in your school or college where there is often a great deal of tension and hostility. Perhaps in the past, this room or area has been the scene of shouting, disruption or even a fight. Could the lessons from the two units at HMP Woodhill be applied to this environment? In other words, could violence be ‘designed out’ of this space by remembering that violence often occurs in environments that are hot, polluted and over-crowded?

Go onto the Howard League for Penal Reform’s website at: www.howardleague.org and look at their ‘Study centre’ and ‘Students’ sections. Gather some up-to-date information about the number of people currently being locked up in England and Wales (note that there are separate criminal justice systems in Scotland and Northern Ireland). Perhaps you might like to consider setting up a Howard League student society at your school or college.
