Over the past decade, students and their careers advisers have become increasingly aware of the benefits of taking a well-structured gap year, in terms of broadening horizons, visiting new and different places or mastering personal challenges.

Taking a year out of studying to do something else can enhance your skills, confidence and curriculum vitae (CV). While many students take a gap year before starting college or university, you can take one at any time of your life, although it is perhaps best not to leave it too late. Possible options include travel, voluntary work, paid work or a mix of all three.
