Serving an ace for self-study

Former international tennis pro and A-level psychology student India Sanders shares her top tips for study success

India Sanders

I started self-studying in 2010, when I left my school in Bath to play tennis full-time at an elite international level. This less traditional route to achieving GCSEs and A-levels has enabled me to develop my approach to studying, and find the key aspects of successful studying. I took up psychology for A-level, working mostly alone but with support from an excellent psychology tutor.

One of the main benefits to studying in a school environment is that fellow pupils ask questions and, together with teachers’ responses, this leads to a thought process and development in your brain which can improve your understanding and knowledge of certain topics. Self-study does not have this benefit and so I have had to work around this, mainly with my tutor.
