1 Rose McDermott’s article defines aggression as a complex social behaviour that results from a combination of biological and social factors which interact with each other. Aggression can be both direct (e.g. fist fighting) and indirect (e.g. verbal aggression). Give two other examples of both direct and indirect aggression, making sure you clearly distinguish between the two types of aggression.

2 McDermott also distinguishes between different functions that aggression might serve (i.e. reactive versus proactive aggression). Explain the difference between these two types of aggression in your own words and give a further example of each. Do you think that an act of aggression may serve more than one function? Explain how this might be so and give an example from everyday life (e.g. a topical news story).
