Untranslatable

A fun piece of research by Tim Lomas looked at words from other languages that have no direct equivalent in English. Lomas’ method involved looking at websites and blogs devoted to ‘untranslatable words’ and selecting any word pertaining roughly to wellbeing. Lomas also searched Google one language at a time and looked for words related to wellbeing, and asked colleagues for any words.

In total this search yielded 216 words. Lomas then divided the words into three categories. Here are some examples from each.
