Is prison rehabilitation possible?

James Treadwell describes escalating violence in UK prisons and why rehabilitation may not work

Last year a highly critical report suggested that the government was failing to provide and maintain safe, secure and decent prisons and that the flagship initiatives put in place to address this have not delivered (National Audit Office 2020). That document also noted that around 40% of the prisons inspected by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) in the prior 5 years were rated as ‘poor’ or ‘not sufficiently good’ regarding the safety of prisoners.
