EXAM EYE

Is free will a myth?

Cara Flanagan provides some exam-based advice to support Nicky Hayes’ article on free will

Free will (and determinism) is a topic covered in the AQA and OCR A-level specifications. However, this debate is a commonly considered evaluation point and therefore relevant to all psychology students. Do we freely make decisions about our identity and lives, or are these determined by, for example, biological or cultural factors?

The article by Nicky Hayes looks at free will from an unusual perspective. She addresses the concept in terms of the here and now. Reading this article should deepen your understanding of the concept. This wider reading underpins A/A* performance. By thinking more deeply around a topic, you are better able to offer a mature discussion of a topic such as free will. This applies especially to application questions.
