The Zeigarnik effect

Adam Hart-Davis looks at why we remember some things better than others, and the implications for revising

Ioften wake during the night, and like to think positively about something in particular, rather than letting bad thoughts crowd in, as they will given half a chance. After a chess match I sleep badly, since I cannot stop myself from going through the game, trying to work out where I went wrong. On the rare occasions when I win, I enjoy going over the final crunch moves.

When I have not been playing chess I often think about woodwork projects, such as the chair I am planning, the bowl I am finishing, or a possible frame to increase the weight of a garden roller. An example plan for a set of tables is shown on this page.
