Why wouldn’t I eat?

An A-level psychology teacher tells us about her personal experience of anorexia nervosa (AN)

I am about to share with you something that I normally keep private. Not because I’m ashamed of what I have experienced, but generally because people don’t understand eating disorders. I have lost count of the number of times I was told to ‘stop being ridiculous and just eat’, to eat because I was being selfish, to eat because I was a mum and think of what I was doing to my family.

The issue with these comments is that they have very little impact on someone who is suffering. People could just as easily have been saying to me that I should go to the moon. I wasn’t going to do that either. I want to explain my experience and how I got through it.
