Few people would disagree with the need for a rigorous research ethics process, whether that research is an invasive experiment or an anonymous questionnaire. However, the ethics process can feel like it is just another ‘hoop to jump through’ before researchers can get on with the real business of data collection. You can imagine a researcher saying:

Perhaps so. But where did the images of the faces come from? Do the people who featured in the images know their faces are being used in this way?
