This is a regular column in Psychology Review. The article illustrates a common approach to A-level essays: describe a topic, apply that knowledge and evaluate the suggestion. This approach applies in particular to the Edexcel exam topic ‘Key questions’, but all exam boards have questions which require a mixture of the three skills. We have inserted the words [describe], [apply] and [evaluate] to indicate where the different skills are demonstrated. (Bear in mind that other interpretations of what counts as description, application and evaluation may be equally valid.)

Please note that, for Edexcel, the [description] should focus on describing the key question/issue not on describing the psychology, and that evaluation is not required in 8-mark Key Question essays.
