Business ethics

Whistle-blowing

Business ethics is a relevant and interesting topic for students today, even though it may seem quite remote from the world of religious studies. Jon Mayled examines the concept of whistle-blowing.

As part of applied ethics you need to understand the role in business ethics of employer/employee relationships. For these relationships to be successful there has to be a balance of interests. While the employer is looking to make a business profitable into the future, employees are likely to be more concerned with having the best possible working conditions and living standards. Whistle-blowing is a key area of this relationship.

Whether or not it is ethical for an employee to ‘blow the whistle’ raises many questions. Employers expect loyalty and confidentiality from their employees but does this mean that employees should not act if they discover unethical, illegal or dangerous conduct in their workplace?
