What is religious fundamentalism?

Interest in religious fundamentalism is high. Peter Manning explores the real nature of this expression of religious belief

AQA: RST4B

Religion in the West has lost centre stage and been replaced by a new set of values over the last several hundred years. Western democracies have steadily pushed their Jewish-Christian heritage into the cultural background, such that Jewish-Christian forms of life are now linked to tradition rather than seen as truly life shaping. Instead, Western values are now formed around notions of equality, individual freedom and the importance of economic growth, and as such are dominated by business interests. Religion in the West has been pushed into the realm of private commitment rather than carrying the weight of publicly agreed truth.
