Marxism and street protesters

Dead White Men and Other Important People introduces you to key sociological theories but it is also a novel about Mila, a young sociology student. In this specially written article, an argument between Mila and her brother, Doni, leads to Mila joining a street protest and finding herself being interviewed on live TV

This article continues the story of sociology student Mila (see SOCIOLOGY REVIEW Vol. 20, No. 3) to show how we can learn about, use and criticise social theories — in this case, Marxism. Ralph Fevre uses the issue of cuts to public sector jobs and protests about these to explore some important Marxist ideas — and some criticisms of them. The article also contains two useful summaries of the concepts of alienation and ideology.

The music in the bar was ridiculously loud and Doni and Mila were taking turns to lean across the table to shout in each other’s ears. The giant TV screen behind Doni’s head was showing thousands of people gathering in a city square near the university. The text at the bottom of the screen told Mila that hundreds of students were joining the public sector workers protesting in the square and that there was an increasing risk of serious disorder.
