The white working class

John O’Reilly/Rex Features

It would appear that recently a new group has become the focus of much media and political attention. It is almost as though a new ‘tribe’ has been discovered in multicultural Britain, and one that society at large should be concerned about. Fears are expressed about this group’s increasing marginalisation and social exclusion — which some allege is in danger of leading to extremes of antisocial behaviour and to members of this group becoming increasingly attracted to right-wing groups such as the British National Party (BNP).

In reality, though, does ‘the white working class’ exist as a distinct cultural and homogeneous group whose norms, values and economic situation differ from those of the working class generally?
