Since the 1980s sociologists have been talking about ‘new’ dads. But what is the evidence that fatherhood has really changed? Here, we look at a recent study in the USA

In this interesting article Gayle Kaufman takes a look at fatherhood, and in particular the effects of fathers’ increasing involvement with the previously femaledominated roles of housework and childcare.

Kaufman points out that women have traditionally had to undertake the ‘second shift’ of family responsibilities alongside work commitments, but increasingly fathers are also being drawn into this.
