Ageing population

What does the term ‘ageing population’ mean to an A-level sociology student? This checklist gives you a quick summary of a key concept

What does it mean?

An ageing population is one in which the proportion of people in the upper age groups is growing when compared to younger age groups. This in turn has an effect on the dependency ratio — the number of people of working age compared to the number of ‘dependents’ (those too young to work or those in retirement).
