Social class and school friendships

School friendships constitute a key part of children’s lives. But what impact does social class have on such friendships and why is this important?

This article provides you with an example of research which uses a variety of methods. The author looks at the importance of social class to students’ friendship groups, finding that most students choose friends from within their own class. The student participants were all aware of issues of class, recognising differences in power, wealth and language between the middle and working classes. It is worth reading carefully what those students who formed cross-class friendships had to say about class.
