In this interesting article based on his ethnographic research, Garth Stahl looks at the issue of the apparent academic under-performance of white working-class boys. While this is often attributed to lack of aspiration, the research shows a much more nuanced view. Stahl explores how the boys deal with the tensions between the individualistic messages of the school, and the collectivism of their working-class backgrounds. The research analysis makes use of Bourdieu’s important concept of ‘habitus’.
