Ethnic capital

South Asian women and higher education

The concept of ‘cultural capital’ has been widely used to analyse educational experiences. But ‘ethnic capital’ might be more useful for understanding British South Asian women’s university experiences

This article is based on the experiences of a small sample of South Asian women at university. Drawing on Bourdieu’s concepts of social, economic and cultural capital, the author introduces the concept of ethnic capital, showing how this is an important factor in influencing the women’s situation while studying. This article is relevant to the topics of ‘Education’, ‘Families and households’ and ‘Culture and identity’.
