Grandparents and ‘beanpole’ families

Ageing populations and childcare

Grandparents around the world seem to be taking on a larger role in caring for their grandchildren. Why is this happening? And why do grandfathers seem such key figures?

Ann Buchanan takes a close look at the role played by grandparents, who often don’t feature in sociological discussions of the family. One of the effects of an ageing population is that an increasing number of families consist of at least three generations. While some recognition has been given to the role played by grandmothers, particularly in matters of childcare, the research discussed here also looked at the equally important, though different, role played by grandfathers. This article, with its international focus, will be of particular help to the topic of ‘Families and households’, and will enable a wider discussion of family roles in contemporary society.
