The rise of the English Defence League

Capitalism and class

What are the sociocultural conditions underpinning the rise of the EDL? What does its rise tell us about the condition of working-class communities today?

Simon Winlow takes a look at the rise of right-wing, nationalist politics, particularly the English Defence League. He examines some of the factors that cause many from the white working class to feel marginalised, and therefore fearful and angry. There is a brief analysis of the influence of global capitalism, and how this cause of problems for the working class is obscured by politicians from both the right and the left. The author then shows how, unable to see the real cause of their situation, some people come to identify immigrants, particularly Muslims, as the scapegoats. This article is of relevance to all students.
