Wasini island, Kenya

A gap-year expedition gave student Andrew Chambers Barratt direct insight into how factors such as international aid, urbanisation and mass tourism affect people in a less economically developed country.

During my gap year I embarked on a 5-week expedition to Kenya with specialist provider Africa & Asia Venture (www.aventure.co.uk).

The expedition gave gap-year volunteers the opportunity to work on a ‘bottom-up’ scheme responding to the specific needs of the community on Wasini island, as well as travelling in Kenya.
