Tsunami

A website that could save your life

The earthquake off the northeast coast of Japan in March 2011 and its subsequent devastating tsunami showed the disastrous impact natural hazards can inflict. This interactive website leads you through the conditions which trigger the most severe tsunamis, and the warning signs of an approaching tsunami, offering advice about what to do if you are in its path.

Log on to the website of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution: www.whoi.edu/home/interactive/tsunami/ and select from the languages presented. The introduction gives an audio commentary from a witness of the 2004 Indonesian tsunami, which eventually claimed over 200,000 lives. Select from the menu bar at the top <What is a tsunami?>, click <Anatomy> and watch and listen to the animation. Then scroll down the same menu tab and select <Effects>. As you click on each of the yellow markers an information box opens up which describes the key factors influencing the intensity of a tsunami event.

By selecting the final option <Next: Did you know?> you will see video 6 footage of the Indonesian tsunami. Scrolling through the image numbers at the bottom of the page you can hear a recording of the sound waves of the 2004 tsunami (3) and watch the path of the tidal wave across the Indian Ocean (6).
