Renewing Hindhead

The A3 Hindhead road tunnel

A fter decades of planning and arguments, the A3 Hindhead road tunnel has finally been completed (Figure 1). This was the seen as the most environmentally friendly, cost-effective way of reducing the congestion and pollution caused by the only stretch of single carriageway (including traffic lights) on the entire route of the A3 between London and Portsmouth. The village of Hindhead and its surrounding areas of outstanding natural beauty can now start to recover.

The 1.8 km-long tunnel was bored through the sandstone rock of the High Weald in southeast England. It took 4½ years to complete and cost £371 million. Was it worth it?
