Windermere

A tranquil scene on Windermere in the morning sunlight. Many visitors to the lake cherish its serenity and beauty and, like the National Park Authority, feel that powerboats are out of place

Windermere has been one of Britain’s most popular holiday destinations since the middle of the nineteenth century (see map on the back page). It has a tranquil beauty and is set among some of the most beautiful landscape in the UK. The lake is very long, making it ideal for water sports.

As tourist numbers have increased over the years, conflict has grown between the many users of the lake. Bowness, the only town on the lakeside, is crowded with visitors on summer days and at weekends and Bank Holidays. The town’s lakeshore pleasure boats take tourists on cruises around the lake and visitors can hire rowing boats. Sailing boats, canoes and fishermen also use the lake.
