The World Cup

A good thing for Brazil?

This year the FIFA World Cup arrives in one of the world’s most fanatical footballing countries. So why is the tournament being met with mixed emotions in Brazil? This article explores how the World Cup is linked to issues of uneven development in South America’s largest country

The Brazilians have a saying about football: ‘The English invented it, the Brazilians perfected it.’ Brazil is the most successful national football team in the history of the FIFA World Cup, with five championship wins in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002. When the Brazilian team plays the country seems to stop. Brazilians are fanatical about football. Their yellow shirts and samba bands are famous and their noisy presence is an essential part of any World Cup.

Brazil is also the most successful team in the FIFA Confederations Cup. This is the rehearsal tournament that is held the year before the World Cup is played. In July 2013, as Brazil completed arrangements to host this tournament, trouble was brewing. The street demonstrations that surrounded the event cast doubt on the Brazilian commitment to hosting the World Cup in 2014.
