Migration to Europe

case study

Mediterranean migration

Migration is a topic often found in GCSE courses. The movement of peoples to and across Europe in 2015 is recorded here

This heavily overcrowded boat was rescued in waters just off the coast of Libya, May 2015

In 2015 approximately 200,000 migrants made the risky journey across the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa to reach Europe. Migration numbers increase in the summer months as calmer seas and warmer temperatures make an extremely dangerous journey slightly less threatening. The number of people attempting the journey, compared to 2014, increased by 149% as people escaped conflict, war and persecution or sought better working opportunities in Europe.

Many of the migrants are family groups — mothers and fathers with their children moving on from persecution and the intolerable conditions of refugee camps, and looking for a better and stable life.
