Power for Mozambique

A key part of GCSE studies is development. This article looks at the problem of energy supply in Africa, and Mozambique in particular.

Earth by night. Notice the large areas of darkness across Africa

A look at a satellite of photo of the Earth at night, such as the one shown here, will raise some interesting questions. Parts of the world, particularly in the northern hemisphere, shine out brightly. Meanwhile in the southern hemisphere there are large areas of darkness. This may be because relatively few people live in places such as the centre of Australia and the Amazon Basin, but this cannot be said of central and southern Africa.

In African countries, two thirds of people do not have electricity in their homes (Figures 1 and 2). Think for a moment about how the lack of electricity would impact on your life. This energy poverty hampers the true potential of the African continent and increases dependency on aid.
