Earth’s changing climate

The view from space

A team of environmental scientists has combined the results of over 30 years’ observation of conditions on the Earth from space. The European Space Agency (ESA) set up the Climate Change Initiative to track changes in the Earth’s climate and the impact those changes are having.

Download the free app ‘Climate from Space’ by ESA from your app store. Be aware a soundtrack runs on opening before presenting the main menu as well as on other pages. The menu offers an introduction to the ‘Climate change initiative’ supplemented by 13 detailed data studies with their own icon, plus a ‘Climate modelling’ summary.

Tap the ‘Greenhouse gases’ icon. Swipe left and read through the second page, scroll down and play ‘The carbon cycle’ animation on the right. This gives a useful overview of some interrelated environmental processes. As you scroll down the visuals that appear on the right can be enlarged or activated by tapping them. To close them and return to the text page tap the cross in the upper right.
