Preparing for unfamiliar fieldwork

Fieldwork is an exciting and practical application of geography. Part of your examination will be about ‘unseen’ or ‘unfamiliar’ fieldwork. This will include information from a fieldwork enquiry other students have carried out and which you will not have seen before. You will be asked to interpret, analyse and evaluate, and this article will prepare you for this element of the exam.

All geographical enquiries start with an enquiry question — this is the main question the researcher is trying to find the answer to. When you first look at unseen fieldwork, you should always think carefully about the enquiry question because this is what the data collection, data presentation, analysis and conclusions should be focused on.
