Census 2021

The initial results

In June 2021, the census took place in England and Wales. This article looks at the first set of results released in June 2022. As a GCSE geographer, it is important to stay up to date with information about how the UK population is changing.

The census takes place every 10 years and is a survey issued by the government that every household in England and Wales is asked to complete. It is a series of questions asking people about themselves, their homes and their lives. Importantly, everyone is asked to complete it on the same day to try to ensure the results are as accurate as possible. The last census was taken on 21 March 2021. Collating such a vast amount of data takes a long time and so it will take 2 years for the full data sets to be released.

The census provides the government with information about the population of the country and helps them to ensure, for example, that the right amount of services are provided in each area.
