What role does the law have to play in a modern society?

This article is of general relevance for the ‘nature of law’ aspects of the A-level specifications, such as OCR Component 3, across the AQA papers (usually linked to concepts of justice, morality and balancing conflicting interests, or the theory of substantive law for Q9) and in the first unit for WJEC and first component of the Eduqas specifications.

If you are going to write an essay about law, society or the role that law plays in that society, it is often a good idea to define your terms. A society is a group of people with common territory, interaction and culture. Members of a society will not necessarily have every aspect of culture in common, but they will encounter each other and find people with opposing views. The question that students often get asked is: what role does the law play in a modern society?
