Banned!

At the time of writing this Upgrade, students were sitting the last of the summer 2011 unit tests. Next Monday we shall start marking them. I know what I am going to see on far too many scripts — words that, on their own, won’t earn a lot of marks because they don’t have much meaning. In the unlikely event that someone appoints me as prime minister, one of the first things I am going to do is to ban these words! Then a lot more candidates will have to think a little more about what they say and, hopefully, will gain more marks as a result. I am not going to be prime minister but what I can do as a first step is to share these words with you in this Upgrade.
