UPGRADE

AQA Unit 1, June 2009

John Wolinski assesses some student answers to the summer 2009 AQA Unit 1 exam

The AQA Unit 1 exam is based on a business start-up. The case study in the summer 2009 exam featured a sole trader (Steve) who is planning to set up a customised-car business. Most students found the case study accessible and their answers showed excellent application, many of them using the information in the case study very effectively indeed.

In general, the six parts to question 1 were answered well with the calculation of total contribution (part (d)) proving to be the main challenge. Most students understood the concept of contribution per unit but many were unable to calculate total contribution. In contrast, calculations of profit (part (e)) showed excellent understanding by the vast majority of students. The biggest issue arising was in part (f), where many candidates appeared to confuse part-time employees with temporary staff. The rights of part-time employees were not recognised.
