UPGRADE

AQA Unit 2, June 2009

Malcolm Surridge reports on the June 2009 AQA Unit 2 exam and assesses student answers to two of the questions

There was much to admire in the way most students tackled the AQA Unit 2 examination this summer. The level of subject knowledge on display was generally impressive, with most questions attracting informed responses. Two areas stand out from this judgement, however. Many candidates appeared unsure about profit margins and a large number had an incomplete understanding of competitiveness, or at least were unable to express their understanding clearly and concisely.

So, what can students do to improve their performance on this paper in future sessions? Generally, students should spend some time thinking about their answers and planning them. Examiners are looking for quality, not quantity, which means your answers should be focused, thoughtful and rooted in the scenario on which the question is based. As an example, I have assessed some student answers to questions 1(d) and 2(b) from the June 2009 paper.
