Are unpaid internships fair?

With many young people struggling to find jobs, Kate Jones explores the advantages and disadvantages of unpaid internships

As a recent graduate, the challenge of finding a placement in these difficult economic times has been somewhat daunting. By September 2009, unemployment for new graduates had climbed to 18.5%, compared with 7.9% for the rest of the population. Recent studies indicate that between July and September 2010, 20% of new graduates were out of work. This means that the proportion of recent graduates who are unemployed has almost doubled since the start of the recession in 2008.

Throughout sixth form and university, I always had a part-time job. Not only did this allow me more money to spend, it also helped me pick up vital skills that gave me greater experience and hopefully employability upon graduation. The benefits of work experience cannot be underestimated — you need something that will differentiate you from the other graduates going for the jobs that you want. Given this situation the number of firms offering internships has grown significantly. However, are internships all they’re cracked up to be?
