In 1996 Edward Perry decided that ready meals represented an untapped market. At the time, the ready meal market was based on the products being relatively cheap and quick to prepare. Perry decided to retain the convenience aspect but improve the quality, and so COOK was established.

Eighteen years on, COOK is a mixture of manufacturing, retailing and franchising, securing £31 million of revenue in 2012 from a UK ready meal market worth £1.85 billion, a market share of 1.7%. In 2013 turnover was forecast to be £36 million, a 16.2% increase in sales.
