St. Baldrick’s Foundation

Paul Hoang looks at the business concepts behind a successful charity

Ingram

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a registered US charity that funds research into cures for children with cancer. It does this mainly through head-shaving events, where volunteers shave their heads in public to raise awareness of children who lose their hair during chemotherapy treatment. In return, family, friends and business colleagues make donations towards childhood cancer research. These head-shaving events have raised over $150 million (£100 million).

Three insurance executives — John Bender, Tim Kenney and Enda McDonnell — devised the idea behind St. Baldrick’s in 1999. They held their first head-shaving event as part of the 2000 St Patrick’s Day celebrations, starting with 20 ‘shavees’ (volunteers) and expecting to raise $17,000 (£11,180). They actually raised over $104,000 (£68,400).
