BHS and Philip Green

In May 2000 Philip Green bought British Home Stores, later changing the name to BHS. It was said to have cost £200 million, but probably only £80 million was paid. What Green bought was a genuine high street rival to Marks & Spencer, with great retail sites but a more downmarket image. BHS had 180 stores and 14,000 staff. Green said at the time that it wouldn’t be rocket science to revive the business.
